Anton is a Russian boy in the process of becoming a trans woman.
A series of 3 animations for the live action documentary film “Paperthin”, directed by Lucia Florez.
Anton goes through the process of applying to political asylum after fleeing Russia. With the help of Lyosha, a queer activist who’s already an asylee, he learns to navigate what it means to be an immigrant in a very different world of New York City, after escaping from a past traumatic experience.
Animations were used to illustrated sections of the story which could not be shot in live action. The main focus was to try and maintain the emotion behind the narrative, which meant the world to Anton.
It was key to properly represent Anton. The documentary ended up being a positive experience for them.
